Emmy nominations 2014: Yay, nay and okay…?

The Oscars of the television world, the Emmys, announced its nominations for the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards Thursday morning.

The small screen brought some real goodies in the past year. Between the mind-blowing and intense final season of “Breaking Bad,” the first season of the Netflix original series “Orange is the New Black” and the HBO crime drama “True Detective,” this year’s Emmys will definitely be exciting.

Here is a breakdown of the positives, negatives and mysteries of this year’s Emmy nominations.

Emmy Nominations: Yay!

The cast and crew of “Orange is the New Black

The Netflix original series garnered a sturdy 12 nominations , including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Taylor Schilling, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Kate Mulgrew and Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for Laverne Cox and Uzo Aduba. The series, crafted by “Weeds” creator Jenji Kohan, was met with immediate praise for its front-and-center, diverse female characters and interesting storytelling.

The cast and crew of “Breaking Bad

The last season of AMC’s “Breaking Bad” was undeniably gut-wrenching, and remained impossible to look away from. This year, it was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series. With stellar performances from Bryan Cranston, Anna Gunn and Aaron Paul, all nominees this year, anything “Breaking Bad” ends up winning will be well deserved.

Nineteen nominations – viewer or not, it’s hard to deny the momentum “Game of Thrones” has garnered, and maintained, throughout the years. Among the nominations are Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Writing and Directing for a Drama Series, with nominations for Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey in the Supporting Actor and Actress categories. The series is a serious force, likely to come out of the Emmys next month with some trophies.

Honorable mentions:

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series – Fred Armisen, “Portlandia

Emmy Nominations: No!

Any nomination given to “The Big Bang Theory” or “Modern Family

The appeal of both shows is understandable. Neither would still be on the air if they didn’t have fans. But, “The Big Bang Theory” shouldn’t even be comparable to the other nominees in the Outstanding Comedy Series category. Simply, it isn’t on the same level. “Modern Family” had its reign for several years at the Emmys,  but it has steadily gotten less fun and quirky and more boring. These two should have been left out in favor of better comedies.

No nomination for Emmy Rossum in “Shameless

There has been constant speculation since the beginning of Showtime’s dramedy “Shameless” that Emmy Rossum could score a nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series. Seasons one, two, three and four passed, with incredibly exceptional and raw performances within each. Regardless, Rossum has yet to be nominated. While there are only six spots available, Rossum should have secured one of them years ago.

No nomination for Tatiana Maslany in “Orphan Black

Tatiana Maslany plays nearly a dozen characters but was surprisingly snubbed for this round of Emmys. Her performance in “Orphan Black” has gained widespread praise, and Maslany was expected to snag a nomination this year. The “Orphan Black” Twitter responded to the snub with support for Maslany, whose name was trending Thursday morning on the site.

Emmy Nominations: Okay…?

True Detective” in the drama category

While it’s undeniable that “True Detective” had an incredible start, and every nomination is warranted, the show was surprisingly placed into the drama category, as opposed to the Miniseries and TV Movie category. The competition in the drama category this year is fierce, with “True Detective” brawling against veterans like “Mad Men,” “Game of Thrones” and “Breaking Bad.” The decision will make for an interesting drama race during the awards in August.

Lizzy Caplan nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for “Masters of Sex

Showtime’s “Masters of Sex” kicked off its first season with interesting plot points, in reference to the history of sexual social science. Lizzy Caplan, who plays Virginia Johnson on the show, was considered a wild card for the nomination in the highly competitive category. The first nomination for Caplan – who, little-known fact, stared as Janis Ian in Mean Girls – garnered some recognition for the Showtime show’s freshman season, which could make for a larger presence at next year’s award show.

Homeland” Emmy nominations

Yes, “Homeland” is a good, intriguing show. Seasons one and two brought incredible twists and turns to keep the viewer on edge, while the third lost some of that momentum. Although the inclusion of Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin is not at all surprising, it still leaves one wondering whether someone else should have taken their spots. Interestingly enough, the show was left out of the Outstanding Drama category, with Damian Lewis losing his spot this year as well.

The 66th Primetime Emmys will air on NBC Monday, August 25 at 6:00 p.m. mountain standard time.
