November marks the highest number of registered voters Larimer County has seen in over 10 years.
There are 227,807 active registered voters and 40,994 of those voters are aged 18-25.
Larimer County is the 6th biggest county in Colorado making it influential in the upcoming election. It is comprised of 27 different cities and towns, including Fort Collins and Loveland.
Jade Ng, a senior marketing major, is currently registered to vote in Boulder County but realizes how important it is for young people to get out and vote.
“(Young people) are taking an initiative and a stand about what they feel towards,” Ng said. “Voter registration here in Fort Colins and other big cities is so important because of the influence they have.”
The upcoming presidential election has caused an increase in voter turnout of all ages. Voter registration of people aged 18-25 has increased by 588 people since the 2012 presidential election.
Lindsey Jessen, a sophomore biological anthropology major, is aware that Larimer County has a lot of influential in the upcoming presidential election.
“Clearly I know that this election has been weird and we don’t know what the outcome will be, but I think it’s great that people are getting involved,” Jessen said.
Larimer County had a 93.06 percent voter turnout during the 2012 presidential election. Voter turnout was at its lowest during the 2015 elections with only 39.53 percent of registered voters, vote.
Fort Collins has the largest number peoples aged 18-25 registered to vote in Larimer County because of Colorado State University students.
“In this day and age we have our opinions on many important issues that we should be able to vote on and not take the back seat,” Ng said. “Now’s the time to change the way (previous generations) were thinking, and move towards modern times.”
The number of 18-25 year olds registered to vote in both major political parties has changed drastically since 2012. In 2012, 9,547 18-25 year olds were registered Democrats and 9,418 registered Republicans. This year has brought drastic change with these numbers as 10,531 18-25 year olds are registered Democrats and 8,985 people are registered Republicans.
Voter registration has reached an all time high in Larimer County with people aged 18-25 becoming one of the largest demographics throughout the county. Students like Dessen believe in the importance of voting because it gives young people a voice.
“They can have their opinion counted and they can have a say in the way things are run,” Dessen said.
