Different dimensions, string lights and frozen waffles are just a few things that describe the widely popular Netflix original series “Stranger Things.” Because of its impressive writing, directing and homage to 1980’s pop culture, “Stranger Things” was one of the most successful summer shows of 2016, and binge watchers rejoiced when Netflix announced that a second season will be released in 2017.
This supernatural series follows Joyce Byers, portrayed by the cult favorite actress Winona Ryder, as she desperately tries to find out why her son, Will, has mysteriously gone missing. In the boring small town of Hawkings, Indiana, everybody shrugs off the notion that something serious could have happened to Will, and everyone calls Joyce crazy when she starts believing that something inhuman is to blame for his disappearance. Only Will’s best friends and Eleven, a mysterious telekinetic girl, are brave enough to face the dangers of the inhuman force and find Will.
With only eight episodes in the first season and a very open ended season finale, “Stranger Things” left fans wondering what could possibly happen next. Although a specific release date has not been set for season two, “Stranger Things” fanatics won’t have to wait long. The second season will be released sometime next year, and here is what we know so far:
The brains behind the show are sticking around.
The Duffer Brothers hope to keep the same aesthetic of season one rolling into season two. Along with keeping the same producers, several of the writers are returning as well, so fans can expect the same sense of strangeness they felt in season one.
Most of the original cast will return for the second season, which is a huge relief for me personally. Every character was scripted perfectly, and who can resist Gaten Matarazzo’s toothless grin? The season one cast is a cuteness overload that I would hate to see go. Season two will feature four new characters, and we know the names of three of them: Max, Roman and Billy.
Max and Billy are rebellious teenaged step-siblings with very troubled pasts. Think skateboarding punks with a drinking problem who may or may not have killed somebody. You know. Normal teenager stuff. Max is rumored to drive a black Camaro…very 1980’s.
As for Roman, he or she is described as a vengeful thirty year old who has grew up homeless with a drug-addicted mother.
All of the new characters seem to be outsiders, but one thing they all want is revenge. These new characters are sure to make things very strange indeed.
Justice for Barb?
One unsettling thing about season one was the disappearance of Barb and how no one seemed to really care. Sure it was sad when Will disappeared, but Barb was the second victim snatched right from a diving board, and she didn’t even get a proper farewell.
The #JusticeForBarb hashtag caught the Duffer Brothers attention, and according to Vox.com, they had this to say: “Barb will not be forgotten. We’ll make sure there’s some justice for Barb.”
The return of the “Upside Down”
Fans only caught a glimpse of the creepy, slimy home of the Demogorgon, which left everyone very grossed out but also very intrigued.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ross Duffer said, “We obviously have this gate to another dimension, which is still very much open in the town of Hawkins. And a lot of questions there in terms of, if the Monster is dead, was it a singular monster? What else could be out there?”
There are a lot of unanswered questions from season one, but it looks like season two will promise answers and so much more. Get ready for things to get even stranger the second time around.
