Friday Sept. 9: Man is arrested for child abuse resulting in death
A man was arrested Thursday for child abuse after 11-month-old RaeLynn Martinez died from her injuries.
On Sept. 7, 2016 just after 4:30 p.m., Fort Collins Police Services initiated an investigation into the injuries of Martinez who was brought into the Poudre Valley hospital by her mother for treatment. The child was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Aurora.
On Sept. 8, Juan Fransico Canales Hernandez was arrested for Child Abuse Resulting in Serious Injury (a class 3 felony). He reportedly struck the child with a chair after getting frustrated. Martinez had been injured at an apartment on Blue Spruce Drive in Fort Collins.
Martinez died from her injuries at about 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9.
Formal charges against Hernandez are pending. He is being held without bond at the Larimer County Detention office. He will be due in court next Friday, Sept. 16.
Friday, Sept. 9: Update on Police Investigate Auto vs Pedestrian Hit-and-Run Collision
On Sept. 6, 2016, charges were brought against Stephanie Schafer by the District Attorneys office for the hit-and-run collision at Drake Road and Mathews Street on July 13, 2016. She was brought up on the following charges:
- Vehicular assault – DUI, a class 4 felony, two counts
- Leaving the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injury, a class 4 felony, two counts
- Careless driving resulting in injury, a class 1 traffic misdemeanor
- Leaving the scene of an accident involving injury, a class 1 traffic misdemeanor
This Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, Stephanie Schafer voluntarily turned herself in to the Larimer County Detention Center and was later released after posting bond.
Friday Sept. 9: LCSO to release more information about soon to be released sex offender
In the upcoming couple of weeks, Sept. 9, through Friday, Sept. 23, the Larimer County Sheriff’s office will release information about a sex offender who will be released into the community.
Garrett Patrick Lejuene will be released into the Fort Collins community. Police do not have control of what area the offender will live.
