We all know Snapchat as the selfie-dominated app that some users have practically used to replace text messaging. However, we at the Collegian are especially excited about their latest update introduced Tuesday: Discover. The Snapchat team describes the new feature as a, “… result of collaboration with world-class leaders in media to build a storytelling format that puts the narrative first.”
Social networks like Facebook and Twitter have successfully combined personal use with news gathering and sharing. With the strides mobile-exclusive apps have made in recent years, we are excited that media outlets are making it easier for users to keep up with the news of the day. In the age of 2015, people of all ages are constantly plugged in, consuming all kinds of information through technology at any given time. Social media is now a crucial tool to find news. According to a report from the American Press Institute, those aged 18 to 29 years old are over three times as likely to find their news through social media than those 60 and over.
As the news climate and consumption changes, it’s exciting that different organizations are experimenting to best reach their audience. Those organizations can only do so much, and it is on us to use these resources to keep ourselves informed. With digital tools like Snapchat’s new Discover feature, learning more about the world is only a swipe away.
