“If man is to survive, he will have learned to take a delight in the essential differences between men and between cultures. He will learn that differences in ideas and attitudes are a delight, part of life’s exciting variety, not something to fear.”- Gene Roddenberry
Everyday you pass by someone who has their own story to tell and their own beliefs to express and due to our busy lives we never bother to care. Despite our different features, actions and speech, all of us can find a common ground yet we still continue to build up this wall between what we do and don’t understand.
Diversity is the foundation for what makes our country so intriguing, powerful and unique. Having a diverse set of physical and emotional variations within our society is what makes everyday a new experience.
Incorporating diversity in the Media is becoming overwhelmingly important and, unfortunately, not many people are embracing the diverse world we live in.
History has proven that in specific cases when media sources handle diversity they fail to tell the story from within the culture they are reporting on, they fail to understand cultural relativity. Both sides, the reporter and the featured culture, could have different approaches to situations, different moral values and different political or social standings and both parties are not wrong in their differences. Every culture varies and without understanding issues from the perspective of the culture one could make the wrong observation or public statement.
It is important to go into a culture and write from within their world, using their beliefs, their opinions and their cultural perspective. Using you own personal views, and reasoning you are not only cutting the people your reporting on short but you are also depriving your self of experiencing a world outside your own.
I am not preaching that writers need to change or that people must listen to my opinion, I am simply stating that everyone in our world is equally important and even if it is not what we agree with or practice, everyone’s beliefs, morals and perspectives are important.
Every voice deserves to be heard, every situation has multiple sides and every person has their own past, present and future, don’t sell yourself or anyone else short because you’re afraid to understand.
